History

Opening entrance at the mall

Opened on October 6, 1975, Fox Hills Mall was California's first 3-level mall. It was developed by the Ernest W. Hahn Firm, Inc. and Carter Hawley Hale Properties, Inc. Gruen Associates were the project architects, but The Broadway was designed by William L. Pereira Associates.[1].

It opened with the following tenants:[1] on 37 acres (150000 m2) of land

A 192470 square foot (17881 m2) Macy's in 1996

A total of 147845 square feet (13735.27 square meters) is devoted to May Co. m2)) (became Robinsons-May in 1993)

A JCPenney store (201780 square feet, 18746 sq m) opened later on January 14, 1976.

Out of the 131 in total, 80 were occupied (329271 square feet (30590.3 square meters). (m2) of) mall stores, including Harris & Frank and Lerner's

In addition to the main house, the outbuildings totaled 30200 square feet (2810 square meters). There were parking spaces for 4491 cars, including 2400 in a parking structure.

One of the most notable features of its original design was the glass-and-steel theme staircase as well as the angled bridges connecting levels. It was acquired by Westfield America, Inc., a predecessor to Westfield Group, in 1998, and renamed Westfield Shoppingtown Fox Hills in 2005. As of 2009, the mall was known as Westfield Fox Hills.

In 2009, the theme staircase was removed, but the bridges remain.

During the year 2009, the former Robinsons-May department store was demolished for a new wing that includes a Best Buy and Target store.

Dining Terrace

A complimentary review of the mall food court (officially known as a dining terrace) was written by Los Angeles food critic Jonathan Gold that pointed out the ethnic diversity of foods available. After 60+ years in where practically invented the modern shopping center, Fox Hills finally realizes its potential.it is located downhill from the posh African-American homes of Baldwin Hills and Ladera Heights, close to the Asian and Muslim enclaves of south Culver City, in proximity to Westchester and the Marina, Inglewood and Playa del Rey.Brilliant: not quite. However, other mall operators would benefit from paying attention.

Transit Access

A transit center is located between Sepulveda Blvd and Slauson Ave in the Culver City mall parking lot, where transfers to many LACMTA and Culver CityBus lines are available.
