Downtown Culver City's Gehry Loggia Building
Gehry Loggia Building, Culver City (3939 Landmark Street), is situated off Washington Blvd. on a cul-de-sac street. The Loggia was created by Frank Gehry, one of the world's best known and most sought after designers, who has won numerous prizes and awards (Pritzker Prize 1989), and Christopher Ward, a Los Angeles-based architect and artist who has won numerous awards for his work.
A concrete tilt-up warehouse once stood in the Loggia. The warehouse's concrete facade is covered in wooden panels and is separated from the outer glass wall by a wooden loggia. Softening the hard edges of the structure was achieved through this design. Glass trees, which appear to float, were attached to the outer walls. When the lights are on in the evenings, the Loggia appears to glow. For the Park Century School, this 47000 square foot warehouse was gutted and specially designed.
Children at the Park Century School in Culver City typically have language-based learning issues, most commonly dyslexia, and oft times ADHD as well. Its 12 large classrooms, six small-group rooms, and 12 individual tutoring rooms are specially designed to accommodate the diverse daily schedules of students. Designed by Mr. Ward, the layout of the school features a minimal amount of curves and angles, a minimal amount of hallway noise so that classes do not become disrupted, and a parent lounge area away from the main road.
